"With this composition ... Schütz created one of the most artistic and heartfelt works of mourning ever written in the history of music. For his recording, Sigiswald Kuijken decided on a soloistic rendering of the individual parts, thus attaining greater transparency. In the middle parts, Kuijken uses high tenors - no altus or countertenors - who possess the specific ability to sing the middle parts over the entire tessitura clearly and with good balance, contributing great richness to the overall sound".

"Schütz's free-form requiem mass setting ranges widely in its choice of biblical texts and shows an exquisite sensibility towards death and redemption. It has received some fine recordings, and this new one is quite outstanding - 12 light-voiced singers alternating solo, ensemble, and "choral" forces, a beautifully balanced ensemble of individual yet blended voices".

"The sound is bright and compact, albeit lacking perhaps the burnished warmth of some of its rivals, and the resulting interpretation has a welcome directness and clarity".

"The fourth volume in the Carus series of Schütz's complete works includes one of his strangest and most beautiful compositions: the Musikalische Exequien ... Now we have another very fine version of this extraordinary work ... extremely well sung and sensitively directed ... This is a disc I recommend without any hesitation".
