"Pale Horse Rider is lonely, lamenting, and distant but beautifully warm, marrying Hanson's love of psychedelic experimentation with a more cosmic take on country. It's more immediate than his sometimes-deranged earlier work, but never so straitlaced as to feel safe or predictable".

"Pale Horse Rider was recorded out in the Mojave, and sounds like it-this is patient, languidly paced music, full of casual saloon-piano rolls and shooting-star pedal-steel sweeps (courtesy of Tyler Nuffer). But it's a desert record where the glow of big-city lights can still be felt in the distance at night and the ominous hum of power lines infuses the air, suggesting the album's peaceful mood can be disrupted at any moment".

"While Wand can be defined by their playful experimentation, veering wildly and thrillingly between genres from track to track, Hanson has imbued this LP with a thematic and musical cohesiveness that makes it the finest record of his career to date. Given his nature, it's unlikely that he will make a record quite like this again, but its timeless qualities make it one to savour".
