"The set list and musical delivery are almost identical to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 1971, another volume in the Official Bootleg Series recorded just nights after Royce Hall 1971. Because of the near interchangeability of these releases, only completists will need to collect every volume of the series. Despite their similarities, each volume is an excellent document of any given night on-stage with Neil Young, and Royce Hall 1971 finds him in just as fine form as the best of his solo performances from this time".

"Royce Hall, 1971 is a solo acoustic gig, recorded in January of that year on the UCLA campus ... a testament to the consistently high level of Young's performances ...".

"If you feel an attack of déja vu coming on, it's no pun and no wonder. Young has released two other shows from that January '71 tour ... But there is a confidence and intensity at UCLA that explains why the concert was an under-the-counter favourite: Young's robust strumming and sharp, youthful singing, like an old soul in an impossibly alpine register, in the Springfield opener "On The Way Home"; the surprisingly hard bass-string staccato underpinning "Heart Of Gold", as if Young was planning to take the song to Crazy Horse".
