"For all of the proclaiming that this is a modern album, it's a pleasantly conservative kind of modern, and most of the artists are getting on a bit. By and large, the songs are well-behaved, immaculately recorded, soft on the ear. There's a preponderance of the mildly Hispanic. Halfway through CD1 there comes a simply wonderful Galayabe by Ndiaye Samba Mboup, formerly the leader of the group Sorano. He is absolutely brimming with passionate conviction, wild in a traditional way with simple acoustic drums, something that sounds like a guitar/ukulele hybrid - and the most incandescent interplay between lead vocal and chorus. Impassioned, extreme - this is the moment the anthology catches light ... You are in the company of a well-picked set from an extraordinary pair of ears. Pleasure ensues".
