"Writing songs brought out the best in Samuel Barber. He had an ear for good texts and responded to them concisely and precisely, an impression reinforced by this double CD, which brings together all the songs he is known to have written. These include 19 that haven't been recorded before ... One of the recording's pleasures is the way the songs come to life through 10 different characters, but with Perez as a constant, eloquent presence (he plays on all the songs save Dover Beach). As a characterful overview of Barber's songwriting - and equally as a snapshot of emerging vocal talent - this is a very rewarding collection".

"Editor's choice - May 2022: Part of the pleasure of this lovely set lies in the variety of marvellous young voices on display, with Barron and Dandy making especially ravishing contributions in Opp. 18 and 45 respectively and Spence (so wonderfully supported by Perez in the composer's own piano reduction) capturing the aching beauty of Knoxville to perfection. Add in Perez's unfailingly idiomatic playing and the chance to hear some of the early posthumously-published songs for the first time on disc, and I'd say you have a hot contender come awards season".

"Recording of the month: This new Resonus collection not only includes 19 songs never recorded before, but uses ten different singers ... adding valuable variety to the overall listening experience. And what an experience it is: even from the earliest opus numbers Barber's songs ripple with acuity and emotional intelligence ... Dylan Perez's pianism is consistently insightful without obtruding - a tall order for any accompanist - and his curating of the entire project is masterly ... These two discs undoubtedly set a new benchmark in Barber's vocal music, and every art song lover should have them".

"Vurdering: BBC music choice" - "Deutsche Grammophon's two-disc set of Barber's complete songs, sung by Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson with John Browning, remains an indispensable resource. But this excellently recorded disc complements it, offering a baritone version of the Hermit Song to put alongside Studer's, and altogether amounting to a very satisfying recital".

"Three cheers for this enterprising anthology from Resonus Classics, which add no fewer than 19 items already published by G Schirmer to the Samuel Barber discography. Masterminded by Michiganborn Dylan Perez (whose accompaniments throughout are a model of descretion and poise), it's an enticing voyage of discovery, with duties shared between 10 strongly characterful singers based in the UK ... Summing up, a hugely enjoyable issue ... Generous measure, too, and outstanding truthful sound and balance".

"Vurdering: Editor's choice" - "This is another outstanding Hyperion release that does credit to Barber in what will soon be a run-up to his centernary".
