"The Picnic Sessions is a delight from start to finish. If your tastes extend to the roots/Americana of artists like Peter Mulvey, Jeffrey Foucault and Chris Smither, you will definitely want to check out this album. It's a grower and a keeper".

"On 'The Picnic Sessions', he reassembles the Mudbloods and adds Jimbo Mathus, who has recently performed with the Dickinsons and Hart as the South Memphis String Band. Understandably, the proceedings ranged from string band tunes to blues stomps, but also some surprising covers ... Given the commonality of Hill Country blues, it's odd that most of the music here barely touches on that unmistakable groove, instead focusing on old time material such as that covered by the South Memphis String Band ... It's a mixed bag on the bluesier numbers. Siegal is capable of admirable and respectful mimicry, but sometimes he tries too hard to implement his southern bluesman enunciation, and that comes acrros more as an affection ... The vibe is infectious, and if you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall while first class musicians mine their collective inner songbooks, 'The Picnic Sessions' is for you".
