"Say what you will about Great Lake Swimmers, but the Canadian alt-folk outfit can't be accused of stagnation or resting on former glories. For their new LP, The Waves, The Wake, frontman Tony Dekker bucks against folk conventions by recruiting a vast array of contributors to add marimba, flute, pipe organ, harp and other eclectic instruments to broaden the Great Lake Swimmers sound. The result is an inspired, richly textured set of songs".

"Canada's Great Lake Swimmers have established their alluring sound through a combination of low-lit ambiance and celestial soundscapes, essential ingredients that have helped lend an atmospheric element to their wholly mellow musings ... Granted, it's hardly the kind of thing one would play for guests at a wild party or as the prelude to a night out, but it resonates all the same. The Waves, The Wake is simply an extension of Great Lake Swimmers' ongoing instincts, and in that regard, it finds them following through to until they realize those very last strokes".

"It's unequivocally a GLS production, but in setting some limitations, they've discovered some new sonic vistas, and in doing so found the middle ground between the lush, existential indie folk of Fleet Foxes and the temperate AM soft rock of America and Seals & Crofts".
