"One wonders who the intended market is for a version of "Do It Again" that features no one named Wilson but does include Mark McGrath. And the presence of a new recording of "Brian's Back," Love's '70s tribute to a guy he has since chosen not to work with, is nothing short of confounding. Lackluster as music and downright puzzling as a cultural artifact, Unleash the Love confirms that whatever you think of Mike Love's 21st century edition of the Beach Boys, he's better off doing that than trying to make music by himself".

"The concept of the two discs is slightly cheated early on as the "new" album does contain some BB remakes itself - Getcha Back and Daybreak Over The Ocean - but as an album it stands up. Just ... Disc Two is a head scratcher. Love often re-records the hits, and I really don't know why. They are so perfect in their original form, it's a bit like pissing on a Picasso. Saying that, The Warmth Of The Sun is delightful and the mid-70s curio Brian's Back is always an interesting listen".

"As if he doesn't quite believe in these songs himself, he's opted to append Unleash The Love with an extra disc of re-recorded Beach Boys classics (California Girls, Good Vibrations, Help Me Rhonda etc), presumably as a gesture of appeasement. Nothing can save the album itself, however. Love offers up the kind of unrelentingly tame MOR that makes Christopher Cross look edgy".
