"It's virtually impossible not to get caught up in the mood of A Different Time. Stark though it is, the sound of this acoustic instrument billows throughout the course of the CD's playing time ... Given that a healthy portion of this music is wholly improvisational makes it all the more enthralling, even if you're familiar with the bountiful imagination of John Medeski".

"Medeski has made a true zig-zag, ditching his norm for a solo piano date that stresses reflection ... This new program reads like a suite, with a yen for upper-register fancies that have a bittersweet vibe".
