"I have always felt that the heart of Tavener's work has been in his shorter choral works intended for church choirs. Here we have a generous selection, performed by the choir of Winchester Cathedral, for which Tavener had a special feeling ... They all show his intense spirituality, his fluency in writing for voices and a range of influences from orthodox chant to Stravinsky and Messiaen ... The Winchester team is an experienced one and they do this music proud ... Even if you already have discs of Tavener's choral music you should consider this".

"Sir John Tavener's long association with Winchester Cathedral and its choir is reflected in several items on this disc written for Winchester occasions ... But the programme ranges well beyond Winchester ... Excellent performances by Andrew Lumsden's forces, an atmospheric recording, with a fine sense of perspective in the Cathedral acoustic ... together make this a highly recommedable single-disc survey of Tavener's church music".

"Editor's choice: I am finishing this review precisely on what would have been John Tavener's 75th birthday ... [Annunciation] is followed by a superb rendition of As one who has slept, once again brought alive by the impeccable pacing and by the fantastic blend of the choir (do they ever breathe?). This is a showroom demonstration of just what boy and girl choristers singing together can achieve. A truly magnificent birthday present".
