"Erwin Schrott is that rare phenomenon: the heart-throb bass-baritone ... He has a superb voice which he uses intelligently and sensitively ... This disc exploits his versatility, though it doesn't include Mozart, whose music Schrott made his name singing ... Despite the acoustic, this cd is well worth listening to".

"On disc, his pleasing lyric bass is a good fit for the characters he plays ... Schrott is lucky to have such a vital conductor ... as the talented young Daniele Rustioni, who makes his and the band's presence felt without upstaging the nominal star singer - one of the most plausible champions of this repertoire in today's opera firmament".

"Singers of Erwin Schrott's charisma are the necessary lifeblood of the opera stage. But on aria collections such as this, you realise just how narrow his vocal comfort zone is ... Hearing him resort to the same sorts of vocal effects every three or four minutes feels inauthentic ... Declamatory passages go well for Schrott ... Credible conducting by Daniele Rustioni".
