"Opera choice: Known as 'the King's opera' because Louis XIV not only chose its subject but also sang whole passages of it ... That we now have this superbly filmed account is thanks to a meeting between the period-performance theatre director Jean-Marie Villégier and William Christie ... It was filmed ten years ago, but the DVD has been worth the wait ... These excellent singer-actors tread a fine line between sincerity and send-up ... Les Arts Florissants excel themselves. The sumptuous realm of 'le roi soleil' is here brilliantly evoked".

"This highly acclaimed production of Atys is musically superb. After a slightly shaky start in the Prologue, vocal roles are undertaken with great confidence ... In terms of production, however, things are less happy ... there is little to sustain a sense of dramatic continuity".

Vurdering (performance): 4/5.

Vurdering (picture & sound): 3/5.

"Vurdering: Gramophone choice" - "Hard on the heels of Armide comes this equally splendid dvd of Atys ... This visually sumptuous production will satisfy the most diehard traditionalist. It's true that the sets and costumes are far removed from ancient Phrygia; but they do evoke the time of Louis XIV, Lully's patron ... Stéphanie d'Oustrac as Cybèle is magnificent ... Bernard Richter finds plenty of passion as Atys ... Chorus, orchestra and conductor are first-class".
