"Strauss's fairytale epic is full of magnificent detail in the hands of Christian Thielemann, while Camilla Nylund's Empress is supple and intense ... Even though there's no libretto with the discs and the synopsis, Hofmannsthal's wordy original isn't entirely helpful either: this is arguably the most satisfying version now available".

"Editor's choice: The Vienna State Opera's centenary production of Die Frau ohne Schatten last year was inevitably one of the hottest tickets of the Straussian calendar. In the event, Vincent Huguet's production was a disappointment. Not so Christian Thielemann's conducting of a State Opera Orchestra on breathtaking form ... Camilla Nylund is probably today's reigning Empress ... Nina Stemme is predictably fine as the Dyer's Wife, too ... The chief glory, however, is undoubtedly the conducting and playing ... This is essential listening for anyone interested in this remarkable work".

"This is still the Böhm performance to own ... A live companion to Böhms pioneering Decca studio recording made only weeks later. The positives of that set are magnified here ... The principal cast, identical to Deccas recording in all but one role, takes the kind of risks that live performance encourages".

"Böhm captures just the correct other-wordliness of the music and the Vienna Philharmonic, tam tam, gongs and all, plays with great feeling and love. the sound is pure, clear monaural ... with even the harps audible".
