"I enjoyed this production; whilst the singing may not be as polished as the ArtHaus, there is, I think, a greater sense of the occasion and of ensemble here, I particularly liked the singing of the two main characters, and that of Olga Tenyakova as Katya ... This is not the opera to watch when you are feeling a little bit down, but it is a production that gives you hope".

"The opportunity to focus solely on the music, undistracted by any idiosyncrasies that accompany a stage production, has actually enhanced my appreciation of Weinberg's score ... This recording projects a greater lyrical poignancy [than the DVD], not least in the extended arias by Marta and Katja in Scene 6 which are beautifully sung here by Nadja Stefanoff and Tetyana Miyus ... Capriccio's engineers have done a fine job in securing a good balance between singers and orchestra".

"The opera's premiere at the 2010 Bregenz Festival was given wide dissemination through an Arthaus DVD release. Now comes an equally compelling representation of the first Russian production given in 2016 by stellar soloists ... The earlier Bregenz DVD perhaps holds advantages through the more technically refined playing ... But the flashback scenes in Auschwitz, which seemed lengthy and discursive in the Bregenz version, are far more convincingly paced by the Russian company".

"Since the stage premiere in 2010, Weinberg's Auschwitz-based opera has been seen in at least 20 theatres and in a dozen different productions, two of which have appeared on DVD. Still it remains a fact that every new staging requires courage and dedication, such are the demands placed on singers, orchestra and audience alike, and Capriccio is to be saluted for giving us the February 2021 Graz venture on CD ... All involved in the Graz performance have done their jobs with such dedication ... [But] I struggle to find any reason to recommend the new issue above the Arthaus DVD ... The intensity Currentzis secured from the Vienna Symphony and the cast of David Pountney's production in Bregenz carries greater dramatic immediacy than the admirable clarity and security of Roland Kluttig and his forces".

"Vurdering: IRR outstanding" - "David Pountney could rarely, if ever, be accused of half measures, but here he resists the temptation to overload the narrative with specious "meanings" in favour of a rounded yet immediate conception ... The cast itself is a strong one ... While Teodor Currentzis secures a committed and idiomatic response from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra ... The production has been expertly filmed ... It all adds up to a package that does full justice to one of the most important of recent stage premieres".

"We melt at Svetlana Doneva's mesmerising delivery of Katja's unaccompanied number. The two leads match more-than-acting with top vocal quality ... Currentzis conducts with a focus brilliantly rendered in the Neos sound".

Vurdering (performance): 5/5.

Vurdering (picture & sound): 5/5.

"Editor's choice: Strassberger's production stands up well on its own terms ... The Russian honours go to the singers, especially Nadezhda Babintseva as Lisa and Natalia Karlova as Martha ... A highly commendable issue: with fascism on the march again in central Europe, and offshoots sprouting obscenely from North America to Russia, Weinberg's opera is increasingly relevant".
