"On "Cornbread, Peas, and Molasses", "The Midnight Special", "What a Beautiful City", and a few others, Mahal and Cooder stay closer to the originals but aren't bound by them. Whether they're being more or less faithful to the sound of Terry and McGhee or taking off from it, these two masters have made an album that honors the artists who inspired them so many years ago".

"Mahal and Cooder stay close to the originals, but whether faithfully evoking the sound and spirit of their mentors or using them as lift-off points for expansion, this glorious album honors their subjects with joy and swagger as well as devotion".

"You could spend a lot of time thinking about why these songs and what Terry and McGhee meant in their own time and what they mean now, but the songs are pure visceral experiences that you feel in your gut and your heart".

"The album is not an attempt to recreate Terry and McGhee's signature Piedmont blues style. In fact, the subtitle makes it clear that the focus is on their songs and what these two contemporary masters can shape from that material. Both these artists are rooted in the blues, but the trajectories of their careers have collectively ranged far and wide, exploring music from Jamaica to the Tex-Mex border, from Cuba to Mali, and beyond. Joined by Cooder's son Joachim on drums and bass, they bring that vast array of musical experience to bear on an interesting cross section of the Terry/McGhee repertoire".
