"In Gloriana, director Richard Jones takes a distracting 'meta' approach, depicting the mechanics of the performance (curtainraiser, prompters) in conjunction with the performance itself ... The idea is to recreate the opera's 1953 premiere. But the opera is not well represented on any level ... Toby Spence is the only cast member who seems more than reasonably engaged ... and the orchestra, under Daniel, sounds like it's in the next room".
