"Rossini died in Paris on 13 November 1868. Four days later, Verdi proposed to his publisher, Casa Ricordi, that a requiem mass be commissioned in honour of his great predecessor, and that he and 12 others ... should be invited to write it ... By the following summer, the 13-movement work had been assembled ... The proposed premiere was cancelled, and Verdi ... soon lost interest in the project ... It was eventually performed for the first time in Stuttgart in 1988 ... This new version ... is an altogether more sumptuous, convincing affair ... La Scala Chorus are on typically majestic form ... Chailly, meanwhile, gives the work tremendous dramatic electricity and sense of authority ... Altogether a historical curiosity then, but presented as well as anyone could wish".

"Editors choices - November 2018: Not every contribution to this multi-authored memorial to Rossini may be in the same league as Verdi's Libera me (later upcycled for his own Requiem), but Chailly and his La Scala forces treat every phrase with such blazing conviction that the patchwork score comes across with real coherence; highlights include Antonio Bazzini's shamelessly operatic Dies Irae and tenor Francesco Meli's impassioned solo in Alessandro Nini's Ingemisco".

"Incredibly, it had its first performance in 1988 ... This new recording is finer than the first one, though no one who has the Rilling need worry. Only hyper-specialists will recognise the composer's names ... The results are varied, ranging from the barely competent to the pretty interesting, but of course Verdi dwarfs them with his Libera me ... This is a fine account, too, with Riccardo Chailly showing that he has become the leading contemporary exponent of the music of that time and place".

"Rossinis død blev mindet af 13 italienske komposniter, som hver bidrog med en sats til en 'Messa per Rossini'. Fra initiativtageren Verdi kom et 'Libera me, Domnie', som han genbrugte i sit senere Requiem. De øvrige medvirkende komponister husker vi ikke i dag, men det samlede kludetæppe er ikke til den fromme og tilbageholdende side ... Nu giver Riccardo Chailly og La Scalas orkester deres bud på den brogede og varmblodige messe".

"The premiere, given in Stuttgart in September 1988, with Rilling directing his revered Gächinger Kantorei ... remains avaiable ... And happily so, since I would be more confident commending this interesting choral curiosity to enquiring collectors in that Stuttgart performance than in the newer one from Milan ... The principal problem is that, where Rilling and his choir are specialists in the preparation and performance of sacral choral music ... the operatically inclined La Scala forces are not ... The Stuttgart performance is generally the finer of the two in terms of engagement, style and technique".
