Er ist nicht der erste Dirigent, der sich an dem schwierigen Jugendwerk die Zähne ausbeist - aber vielleicht der beste! Selten hat man Mitridate so temperamentvoll gehört, mit so viel Lust zur Kadenz und so viel rasender Leidenschaft im Orchester ... Eine gefährliche Konkurrenz zur Referenzaufnahme unter Christophe Rousset von 1999".

Erato has assembled a top-notch cast of nearly all French singers for this Italianized version of a French tragedy. The entire ensemble , Michael Spyres included, deliver their music with a clear stylistic link to the great tragedies lyriques of Lully and Rameau ... This is probably the most successful recording of Mozart's opera we will ever see on disc; there is no doubt in my mind that it is the most exciting by a long stretch".

"Consequently we might need some special reasons to buy this live 1997 Salzburg Festival version with its inevitable balance issues, its cuts in the material, and its lack of a printed libretto. The first is that it is conducted by Roger Norrington who brings terrifically fresh and incisive orchestral detail to the score. The second is that in Bruce Ford it has the best Mitridate in the business. Beyond that, things are rather less persuasive".
