Man bleibt objektiv.

"The idea for this programme is more seductive than its execution ... The youthful piano quartets ... are both played with enthusiasm by the Fauré Quartet. It's the songs in between that are the problem. Simone Kermes ... sings them with little sense of style or idiom".

"Blumenthal is adept at switching from Brahmsian sweep to the pre-Till Eulenspiegel sparkle ... There's sufficient unpredictability in the second-movement Presto, and the extra spring of the finale's development to keep this performance very companionable, and the sound is rich as well as perfectly balanced".

"In ways more subtle in scale but no less carefully provocative ... this recording asks us to redefine what we think we mean by Romantic performance values ... A selection of much-loved Lieder, sung by Simone Kermes with a cabaret-style intimacy that well suits these arrangements ... make an ideal match for the knowing naïveté of Kermes and the quartet, as dry and refreshing as a decent martini".

"Kermes sings all these songs with engaging freshness".
