"Harry Christophers and the Sixteen have embarked on a series of recordings of Purcell's Welcome Songs, both for James II and as here, for Charles II. This is the third volume for Charles and as before there are eight singers involved with the ensemble ... It's enjoyable to hear less well-known theatre songs, the much better-known Chaconne 'Two in one upon a ground', the 'Bell Anthem' Rejoice in the Lord always, a brief catch and so on. It contextualises Purcell's monarchical songs enjoyably and ensures a ready-changing programme of brief pleasures. Clarity of diction is a given as is ensemble precision. Above all there's a sure sense of communicative esprit and an avoidance of dogmatism and pedantry. Performances are vital and alive, crisp and forward-moving".

"Christophers has here programmed as deftly as Purcell wrote ... The performers are few - eight vocalists, two recorders, a 12-string band plus continuo - fleet and wonderfully bold. In laments, the singers swell sustained notes with their melancholy; in snappy imitation, they make cascading motives sparkle ... The band is even better, etching contrapuntal subjects incisively and driving tempos with urgency ... This is a wonderful recording".

"This well-constructed programme gets off to a charming start with Rejoice in the Lord always ... The vocal soloists sound comfortable and focused here, as in the other sacred pieces ... The bass, Ben Davies, turns in the most solid and secure performances, including in the Welcome Songs ... The Sixteen's string band ... is less astringent and (to my ear) agile, though some may prefer its statelier outlook ... The continuo group contribute some neat touches".
