"Her comeback is certainly an unexpected ride, bumpily rollercoastering on John Congleton's eager production, which can tend to be overpowering and overcomplicated ... the sad fallout of commercial pop that just patchworks trendy styles together. But at least The Rise does so with zeal, and slinky distorto-pop number Right Road hints at something less contrived. Next time, though, I'll get off at the first stop".

"In its own way, the album is as much a redefinition for Furtado as Loose was a decade earlier, positioning her as a mature pop artist with adult alternative undertones".

"Nelly Furtado's exuberant energy elevates her new album. Her flexibility is an asset as she attempts many styles-synth-rock, R&B, and piano balladry among them".
