"In a rare case of restraint, Morrissey has left this "20th Anniversary Definitive Master" mostly free of the Lucasian meddling that has characterized his previous reissues. The original 11-song tracklist remains intact. This truly allows an opportunity to reassess with the benefit of two decades' hindsight. And, yes, Vauxhall and I is still great. If anything, its charms have become even more appealing with the passage of time".

"In 1994, Morrissey told the world that he was retiring from music. After ten albums in ten years, and a life of near-constant touring, the recent deaths of three close colleagues was the final straw. The grand dame of pop music was bowing out. Vauxhall & I was to be Morrissey's last stand. Of course, it didn't pan out that way - the man came back with a new album the very next year - but it sure sounds like goodbye. Vauxhall & I is portentious, doom-laden, dripping with pathos and the settling of scores. It's also the best record Morrissey has ever been involved with".

"The second disc has Morrissey at his alluring best at Drury Lane's The Theatre Royal in 1995. This recording came from the tour to support Boxers, the lead single off the Moz's 1995 compilation World of Morrissey. There are a breathless, incendiary version of Billy Budd, a surprisingly bare Spring-Heeled Jim, a few oldies like Jack The Ripper and of course other tracks from Vauxhall and I. Morrissey cemented his status as a viable solo artist after The Smiths with this album. It is this effort that sets the benchmark for softer alternative rock to come".

Vurdering 5/5.

"Det var tænkt som en svanesang og et farvel til en verden, hvor store kunstnere skæres ned med motorsave. Morrisseys hovedværk, »Vauxhall And I«, fejrer 20 års jubilæum med en genudgivelse".

"Twenty years ago, Moz bounced back from his annus horribilis to make his solo masterpiece ... It's Morrissey's acid wit that elevates this album from something good into something great ... Vauxhall And I - here remastered and repackaged with a live show recorded at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1995 - is near-perfect because it sounds closer to a Smiths record than any of his solo outings before or since ... Certainly record buyers at the time liked it, delivering it straight to Number 1 in the album chart, thus exonerating our outlawed friend".
