"This 1969 album (...) is now revived on vinyl by Gilles Peterson's Arc imprint. A sonic portrait of Detroit, Lateef's adopted home, the album got short shrift from many jazz critics of a purist mindset back when it was released, probably because Lateef brought in R&B heavyweights like bassist Chuck Rainey and drummer Bernard Purdie to help create a unique meld of jazz, soul, and funk flavours ... Mastered by Bernie Grundman, the music, which comes across like a lost blaxploitation soundtrack, sounds fantastically vibrant".
