"With his operetta "Gypsy Love", premiered in 1910, Franz Lehár succeeded in combining the dramatic genre of opera with rousing Viennese waltzes and Hungarian folksongs. Dragotin has promised the hand of his daughter Zorika to the rich Jonel. Shortly before the engagement is formalised, the nature-loving Zorika comes across the gypsy Józsi on the Czerna, a mountain river in Romania inhabited by mermaids, and invites him to play music at her engagement party. But when it comes to the engagement kiss from Jonel, she takes fright and flees back to the Czerna, where she hopes a glass of water from the river will reveal the future to her".
