"With Am I a Girl?, Poppy takes her music's questioning and blurring of reality to another level. Poppy.Computer's witty electropop was a logical extension of the videos that made her a viral celebrity; on her second album, Poppy focuses on this fame with songs that reflect what pop music sounds like outside of that self-contained world ... the impression that Poppy's body of work is like a neural network's approximation of pop music; this time, she's added more sources and delivered more unpredictable results. While it's not as cohesive as Poppy.Computer, Am I a Girl? definitely isn't stale, and it succeeds at expanding Poppy's sound and identity enough to keep fans listening and guessing".

"The album features fourteen tracks including collaborations with Diplo in "Time is Up" and the producer of Lady Gaga's Born This Way album, Garibay, in "Aristocrat." Evolving from simple, kitschy pop tunes like "Chic Chick" and "Iconic" to heavy metal in "X", Poppy maintains her mechanical and robotic vibe that stems from her YouTube personality via the prevalent use of synths. Hidden within the meat of the album are messages of female empowerment and opposition to gender roles and the gender binary ... The tracks that work, work very well, while those that don't detract from the core message of the album. At the very least, I commend Poppy for trying to convey a positive and progressive message that I'm sure a plethora of other artists wouldn't even dare to attempt".
