"Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall goes solo on American Soul with covers of classics by Otis Redding, Etta James and Ray Charles ... His voice is not the main problem. The central weakness is that, no matter how good the songs, you don't get swept away with the emotion of great (hit) lyrics".

"American Soul is Hucknall's first release since Simply Red disbanded in 2010 ... The 38 minutes of American Soul zip by. Of course, the originals are better, and Hucknall is no Otis Redding ... Hearing these songs in any format is a tremendous pleasure, and Hucknall here does them credit".
