"For all Britten's manifest versatility and lightning craftmanship, for all the skill and enterprise that has gone into making these fragments presentable, and the dedication of the performers, it is still hard to feel any sense of lost treasure having been unearthed. Though there is much that is interesting, and much that is indeed typical, it is certainly not essential Britten, or Britain".
