"On Emma Jean, the singles, and tracks such as "Paralyzed," "Eye to Eye," "Talk to Somebody," "Stone Angel," as well as the rousing country-soul scorcher "Don't Leave Me This Way," engrave a particular Lee Fields & the Expressions signature; currently no one is in their league. Emma Jean even stands out from its excellent predecessors in performance, arrangement, production, and inspiration".

"An album with a wistful, set-adrift emotional impact that lingers, even when the words don't. The try-to-work-it-out pleas in "Just Can't Win" or the breakup finality of "Paralyzed" don't read like much when they're written down, but the words are only a third of the definition where this record's concerned. Thematically, Emma Jean is a record that's front-to-back frustration instilled with the anxiety of loneliness and alienation-the wishes expressed in the song titles of "Eye to Eye", "Talk to Somebody", and "Standing By Your Side" aren't easily attainable, but Fields and the Expressions don't wallow or kick at the dirt. They push up tempos, channel low-down feelings into high-up catharsis, and make sure every punch connects".
