"Johnson's fluid, slicing guitar licks dart and spark with unpredictable elasticity throughout this set. His voice soars to the heavens time and again, never misplacing its melismatic passion no matter the tempo. From the funky opening original "Every Day Of Your Life," constructed around a wise lyrical message, to a churning "Down In The Valley" and exquisitely tailored revivals of the lights-out slow blues "Strange Things Happening" and a hard- driving "I Need You So Bad," Jimmy is never less than masterful".

"This is Johnson's first recording in more than ten years. Outside of Chicago, he's been mostly under the radar for years. Hopefully, this will inspire new listeners to seek out others in his catalog. God willing we'll have a few more. Jimmy Johnson's a living legend unlike any other. Buddy Guy gets all the ink, but to this writer's ears the elder Johnston is every bit as intense, albeit in a different way".

"With all due respect to Pinetop Perkins and others who recorded as nonagenarians, not one showed the nails-tough fortitude Johnson does here. Despite its inevitable age-induced fraying, his distinctive high-pitched voice retains its longstanding delicate balance of aching hurt and cautious hopefulness. The Chicagoan's guitar, pleasurably venomous on the original "Rattlesnake" and just as effective on eight more tracks, speaks with great personality".

"Lyrically, Rawls is first and foremost a storyteller, and his dedication to meaningful narrative comes through in his singing as well ... he delivers his message with a mnimum of histrionics, preferring to rely on unadorned emotional honesty ... he deserves much wider recognition than he has so far achieved. Let's hope that this disc, along with a little luck and the support og big-eared listeners, will help him achieve it".

"Although this disc, like most of Johnson's latter-day work, is solidly blues based, his diverse palette is on full display. Hard-charging funk rhythms (...), his trademark minor-key chord constructions, and a sharp-eyed, poetic lyricism permeate this set ... His guitar playing is, quite simply, a master class in blues fretwork - impeccably structured and logical, yet laced with a powerful emotional thrust ... this release is a must-hear".
