"Editor's choice - September 2021: Coming to this lovely recital with my ears still pleasantly ringing from Cargill's orotund Brangäne in Glyndebourne's Tristan und Isolde last month, I'm in awe at this lovely artist's ability to paint on these much smaller canvasses without any loss of focus or colour; the intimacy and tenderness which she and Lepper bring to Hahn's evergreen 'À Chloris' is worth the price of the disc alone, but everything here is utterly beguiling, with the strings of the RSNO providing luscious support in Joseph Jongen's 'Calmes, aux quais déserts' and Chausson's 'Chanson perpétuelle'".

"Recommended: I have loved Karen Cargill's smoky mezzo-soprano from the very first time I heard it and ... I was not disappointed; this anthology of mélodies from four of the greatest French song-writers plus the bonus rarity of a song by the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen seems to me like the culmination of her art ... Sensitively accompanied by her regular pianist partner, Simon Lepper, Ms Cargill presents us with the music-loving Francophile's ideal: eighteen of the loveliest Romantic and Symbolist love songs".

"The French 'mélodie', like the German Lied, lives or dies by treatment of the words, and Cargill's grasp of these is uneasy, to say the least. Vowels are a particular problem ... Consonants overall need to be sharper ... Lepper too reaps his share of scratches".
