"The two talented musicians met a few years ago (via Kevin Morby) and made vague plans to collaborate. The meeting finally happened, and the resulting album, I Walked With You a Ways, plays to these artists' strengths as writers and performers ... Crutchfield and Williamson sing with strong voices, often in unison, without overpowering each other. Their vocals retain their distinctive tones even when the two croon in harmony ... Crutchfield and Williamson pack a lot in a short time through their inventive songwriting and expressive voices. The two singer-songwriters often stun the listener with their poetic directness".

"Much of the allure here lies in the duck and dive of their two voices: Crutchfield's full of elasticity and billow, Williamson's offering a sweetness and a trill. When they meet, as on the warmly unapologetic Hurricane, something magical is sprung ... There is plenty of soft-brushed drums, banjo and steel, talk of dry counties, screened-in porches and Texas in the rear-view mirror. When Williamson hits a high, howling note around two minutes in on No Record of Wrongs, it sounds like clear mountain air".

"Plains is Katie Crutchfield, otherwise indie-folkster Waxahatchee, alongside singer-songwriter Jess Williamson, and the band's foundation is their Southern backgrounds. Encouraging each other to plunge into these shared roots, they've grabbed country and shaken it: Thelma and Louise with guitars ... Frank and redemptive, it's a journey of small Texas towns and wide open spaces".
