"The performance, by a group heretofore unknown to me, is impeccable. Solo vocal standouts are the bluff ... The expertly trained choir and orchestra under Guy Van Waas, singing and playing with verve and even vibrato, turn this piece into the celebration it was meant to be, and the recording is vivid and brilliant ...This is the perfect way to acquire the taste for French Baroque".

"There is some fine singing here. Marc Labonnette and Philippe-Nicolas Martin have been well schooled in the art of the French baritone, whilst Artavazd Sargsyan has that nasal tenor sound typical of French singers in his portrayal of Bacchus ... However, it is the four female singers who shine in this production. Chantal Santon-Jeffery's portrayal of Lydie in Act I and La Gloire in Act III is particularly fine ... The Philharmonia Baroque Chorale are in fine voice. The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra are sparkling and add a lot to the production, especially in the dance numbers, all under Nicholas McGegan's excellent direction".

"McGegan's touch has never been surer, and he pushes artists and moods to their expressive limits ... Steering a superb cast, McGegan also makes sense of the allegory's bonkers mix of affects within a scene. Among soloists, Camille Ortiz is the stand-out, as innocent as she is imperious playing first a shepherdess, then a Roman warrior ... A shame this recording isn't a DVD!".
