"Barely a month now passes without a new issue from Hyperion's current go-to baroque specialists Arcangelo ... An occasional dip in quality could easily be forgiven. But there is absolutely no sign of that on this outstanding disc of sacred music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier ... Interesting and under-appreciated repertoire, wonderfully elegant, stylishly executed playing, and adroitly chosen soloists ... I have to say I barely noticed the time, such is the ardour of the singing and the commitment of the playing. And perhaps it is these qualities which render any recording by Arcangelo to be something of an event ... Indeed I found the whole disc both spiritually fulfilling and artistically rewarding".

"Auch wenn der erste Teil musikalisch abwechslungreicher ist und Vokalisten und Instrumentalisten fein abgestimmt miteinander agieren, bildet die zweite Lektion den Höhepunkt der Einspielung. Hier gestaltet Boden seinen Part derart emotional und vielschichtig, dass Degout in seinen Mitteln beschränkter und eindimensional wirken muss. Die Instrumentalisten spielen klangschön und punktgenau".

"These performances by Arcangelo of the Litanies and Magnificat are unfailingly expert, with ornamentation gracefully integrated. The performances of the Leçons have a greater focus and intensity than those of the Litanies. The baritone Stéphane Degout and the tenor Samuel Boden strike a fine balance between the meditative aspects and the near-operatic drama of the words from the Lamentations of Jeremiah".

"A new disc of delights frmo the sprawling oeuvre of Charpentier is always welcome, especially when it comes from an ensemble as reliable and adaptable as Arcangelo. A quick glance at the list of singers and instrumentalists ... is assurance enought that they won't lack for expertise, musicality or style ... Leçons de Ténèbres ... are the works of a master, full of the kinds of immediate melodic and harmonic expressive details Charpentier had learnt in Italy ... superbly sung here by Samuel Boden ... Stéphane Degout is less pliantly lyrical and involving in the other two Lessons but creates his own world of weary desolation".
