"Janiva Magness released her first album in 1997, but it took her nearly two decades until she snagged a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2016. The nod was for Love Wins Again ... Like its predecessor, Love Is an Army is rooted in Southern soul-blues (...) but Magness adds new dimensions to this blueprint. Notably, there's a strong country undercurrent that runs through the album, first surfacing on "On and On" (...) but reappearing on the title track and the fragile "Down Below." When paired with the adventurous blues that pops up elsewhere (...) this Americana turns Love Is an Army into a rich, rewarding affair that betters its fine predecessor".

"Upset with the divisiveness driven by the current political climate, Magness delivers a dozen songs, most co-written either by her or veteran producer/guitarist Dave Darling, advocating compassion and love. While that message on its surface may seem simplistic, the passionate performances and Magness' dynamic vocals will have even skeptics singing along to choruses such as "Reach your hand out - tell me what's that say about you" with the same Mavis Staples-styled fervor she brings to these tracks".

" ... a soulfully radiant album ... With every album, Magness grows more deliberate and sure of herself as a writer, and her vocals demonstrate her ability to dwell within a song, to capture every nuance and phrase of the song, to deliver the song so that it transforms us".
