"Miri means contemplation or dream in the Bamana language and adequately represents the intent of Bassekou Kouyate's fifth studio release. Miri takes us to Kouyate's Mail-based hometown of Garana to highlight the struggles and triumphs the region has endured ... While it lacks the political punch of 2015 album Ba Power, Miri stands on its own as a call for peace, mindfulness and reflection".

"Bassekou Kouyate and his family, by blood and otherwise, are a masterful crew. Miri is not their most immediately attention-grabbing work. Instead, it is an ornate display of timeless beauty, intricate, colorful, and technical, evoking older West African traditions and a global network of sound along with pristine, modern-day production quality and a brilliant sense of composition and ingenuity".

"After two albums of scuzzed-up distortion befitting any Sub Pop alumnus, Bassekou Kouyaté dispenses with trickery and returns to his studio in Mali to think about (the title track translates as "contemplation") the state of his nation. With his wife, Ami Sacko, on vocals and his son, Madou, on bass ngoni, he laments the problems currently tearing the country apart (...) and cherishes what is worth holding on to".

"Since their stunning debut (...), each album shows a development on the previous one, but this one more than others ... The ngonis sound brighter and sharper (...) and more capable of tonal variety. Bassekou playing bottleneck slide ngoni (...) is just one of the innovations. Another change is in his voice production, which is more mellow overall at the same time as being more engaging. There is perhaps less of the wonderful voice of his wife Amy Sacko this time but when we hear it, she really makes her mark ... Featuring guests on some individual tracks adds a great deal including rhythmic variety, particularly where they are joined by the award-winning Cuban Medra Limpia to create some exciting Afro-Cuban music and take the ngoni into a new era ... In the excellent 16-page booklet we are offered a synopsis and background to each of the songs - lots of environmental and political concerns - as well as arresting photos".
