"The 74-year-old guitarist is a veteran of the New Orleans scene, a trusted sideman for the likes of Johnny Adams, Lee Dorsey and Irma Thomas, and a frontman who's scattered a few prized, mostly uptempo solo albums across the decades. On "My Future is My Past" (Anti), he slides into his after-closing-time voice, a deep, mellow yet still pliant instrument that can rise into a falsetto. He finds a comfortable-yet-evocative middle ground between blues and jazz on a series of standards and deep cuts".

"My Future Is My Past is not an album that will get the party started, but if it's a rainy night and you want to hear the sound of a man skillfully baring his soul, then this is just what you need".

"Washington pays tribute to two New Orleans icons with his cover of Ernie K. Doe's "I Cried My Last Tear," an Allen Toussaint compositon Washington transforms from Does' laconic strut into B.B. Kingly laid-back blooze, with Washington tossing his crooner tonsils out the window, exchanging 'em for some crusty Ray Charles soul and window-shattering falsetto. Even wearing a muzzle, the Wolfman is still dangerous, a shape-shifting genre-buster whose bark leaves an imprint as deep as his bite".

"Walter Washington, a New Orleans blues and r&b veteran, has been open to singing jazz in the studio since the 1980s. On this recent austere session, his rich voice hedges that way in a sage, deliberate manner as it reflects the sensitivity or strength found in the lyrics to ageless classic ... Not incidentally, there's a fair amount of Washington's high-quality blues guitar work, too".
