"Otis Spann Is the Blues didn't do much in the U.S., but British blues fans loved the record after seeing and hearing Spann play with Waters on tour. Among them were guitarists Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green (shortly thereafter joining Fleetwood Mac). Spann's album made such an impression on the pair, it planted the seed for a full-fledged collaboration between the pianist and their future band a few years down the road. In the 21st century, the album endures as the work of a Chicago blues master coming into his own".

"Otis Spann Is The Blues (...) is the first and best album by the most soulful 20th century blues pianist; Walking the Blues, recorded at the same session, was not released until 1972, two years after his death. Having joined Muddy Waters' band in 1952, Spann gives his all, without artifice or reservation to his debut, accompanied only - but brilliantly - by electric guitarist Robert Jr. Lockwood".

"Recorded in 1960, this was Otis Spann's first full-length album under his own name. Listeners in the early '60s who were familiar with Spann only from his hard-driving ensemble work with Muddy Waters were probably astounded at the sensitivity, subtlety, and deep-textured soulfulness of his playing and singing here; Robert Jr. Lockwood's deft, jazz-influenced guitar work only heightens the feel of unselfconscious but profound artistry ... blues of timeless eloquence and lasting value, purveyed by two of the music's all-time masters".
