"Endlich!

"In the spotlight as Robert, Duke of Normandy is American tenor John Osborn ... Osborn is in terrific form as Robert, a heroic role that suits him down to the ground ... Forty-six-strong here, the Chœur de l'Opéra National de Bordeaux has been well prepared by chorusmaster Salvatore Caputo and sound in fine voice ... French Grand Opera specialist Marc Minkowski ... conducts the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine with a pacing and dynamic range that feels most appropriate, allowing his players to thrive ... A striking and ground-breaking Grand Opera which fuses love and romance with mystical elements, in this awesome Bru Zane recording Robert le Diable demands to be heard by opera devotees".

"Recording of the month - Editor's choice: Minkowski and his Bordeaux forces ... powerfully bring home its originality and the striking novelty of the sound world that so startled its first audiences ... John Osborn's tone has darkened a bit of late, though his effortless high notes and expressive dynamic range allow him to convey the turmoil in Robert's mind wonderfully well. As Alice ... Amina Edris reveals a burnished lyric soprano and splendid dramatic commitment ... It all adds up to a formidable re-evaluation of a seminal if neglected work, as well as being a remarkable achievement in its own right ... I cannot recommend it too highly".
