"The miracle man returns with yet another extraordinary album. Curtis Salgado sings soul and the blues as if honey and habanero were sizzling on a whetstone. You'd expect rail crossings to lower with the melodic sound of his harp ... It would be an injustice if this album doesn't win Salgado and Hager several awards".

"Rough Cut, as the title suggests, is stripped down acoustic style across a baker's dozen of originals and both familiar and relatively seldom done covers. "We did it for the love of the music," says Salgado. "This is where our hearts are. These are deep songs we love to play." ... These are some of the most emotive vocals Salgado has ever laid down, his harmonica playing is creative and inspiring, while Hager's guitar, whether picking or on slide, is dazzling throughout".

"First working together in 2003, Curtis Salgado and Alan Hager at long last consummate their off-and-on blues partnership in the studio. These Portlanders feast on sizing up their own tradition-oriented tunes and treasures from Muddy Waters, Son House and Big Bill Broonzy. Salgado's singing voice and harmonica are convincingly expressive in tone, range and subtlety. Hager's guitar creates a momentum that bespeaks a synthesis of honest emotion, unstudied instinct and technical deftness".

" ... this Alligator Records release succesfully combines the talents of both Oregonians, who penned six originals balanced with a healthy dose of well-executed covers, augmented by a supporting cast of guest artists ... This excellent balance of Pre-War blues standards and originals works extremely well, and compliments go to Johnny Lee Schell, who did an excellent job mixing the album - it sounds superb ... this is American Classical music at its finest".
