"Mauceri makes a strong case for this fascinating alternative version of Gershwin's dramatically powerful masterpiece".

"He [Harnoncourt] proves unexpectedly at ease in its idiom, eliciting some convincing swung rhythms from the insicive Chamber Orchestra of Europe and some fervent gospel singing from the Arnold Schoenberg Choir".

"The chorus supplies precision and refulgent tone, while the orchestral playing is clean and idiomatic, with conductor David Robertson shaping an interpretation that is well-paced and offers both good balance and plenty of fine detail ... As to the large cast, there can be no complaints about the quality of the voices ... Owens's grand and enriched baritone helps him convey Porgy's indomitable spirit in fully three-dimensional form. He's admirably partnered by Angel Blue, her resplendent soprano soaring aloft as she charts Bess's emotional complexity".

"However strong the minor roles, the main protagonists are less than ideal ... Jonathan Lemalu is nothing if not committed as Porgy, but the gritty vibrato he has developed inevitably pales beside the glorious timbre of White in his prime ... Harnoncourt certainly gives us plentiful food for thought".

"The cast is strong ... Angel Blue's Bess might just be the finest since Leontyne Price's ... Though lacking Willard White's vocal ardour, Owens's stoical conception of the role and grainier vocal quality are by no means incompatible with the older protagonist the story implies ... David Robertson conducts with perspicacity, prizing fine detail over swing or drive - which is one way to go ... The special chorus hired for the occasion is fabulous ... No libretto is provided but for the most part the words are wonderfully clear".
