"The controversial reggae star returns with a majestic howl of rage and an inspired mix of dancehall, roots and rock".

"With Upside Down 2020, Buju's first album in a decade, he sounds as vital as ever. At 46, his iconic, shape-shifting Cookie Monster voice has retained all of its charisma and versatility, and he traverses roots reggae, lovers rock, ragga, and contemporary dancehall with ease. The album's only misses come when Buju tries to Americanize his sound, on songs like "Call Me" and "Cherry Pie," in which Pharrell becomes so transfixed by a gorgeous ass that he falls head over heels in love".

"On this greatly anticipated comeback, the tropical tracks have greater impact, with "Yes Mi Friend" a fitting reworking of Bob Marley's prison-survival epic "Duppy Conqueror", expertly co-produced by Marley's son Stephen, and the anti-gun "Steppa" as tight and on-point as anything from Buju's heyday at the Penthouse label. "Beat Dem Bad" is one of the best boastful dancehall outbursts, and opener "Lamb Of God" is groovy gospel. But tell-tale crossover material is overproduced, especially orchestrated John Legend vehicle "Memories", and Pharrell is fractured on "Cherry Pie" ... The end result aims for too many bases, rather than making a definitive statement".
