"Those who know Hull's work as a superpicker would do well to investigate this dimension of her persona as well. For the rest of us, Weighted Mind is a poignant, bracing work by an adept singer and songwriter. She openly invites us into her world with real vulnerability and honesty, and reveals her inner strength in doing so".

"Few people can play the mandolin like a maestro at Hull's level can and even then, she has worked well throughout the years to differentiate herself as her own artist to the point that there's certainly room for two to don the "mandolin master of newgrass" title".

"Sierra Hull is a mandolin vituoso and former chil prodigy who signed to Rounder Records when she was just thirteen-years-old. This, her first new album in five years, is produced by Béla Fleck and features harmony vocals from Rhiannon Giddens, Alison Krauss and Abigail Washburn ... One might well be anticipating an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink extravaganza of an album. This is something very different and very much better than that. "Weighted Mind" is a sparsely accompanied record. Fleck supplies banjo on "Queen Of Heart/Royal Tea" and "Black River" but otherwise the instrumentation consists of Hull's own mandolin and octave mandolin, supported throughout by the supple bass playing of Ethan Jodziewicz. Lyrically (...) it's intensely personal. Hull has clearly exorcised some demons in those five silent years, producing a body of unflinchingly plain-spoken songs in the process".
