"For the most part, the songs on sometime freak-folk singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart's ninth album are downbeat but heartfelt, his wry words backed by minimalist guitar lines and unobtrusive synths ... It makes for an incoherent, slightly unsatisfactory whole".

"The album's overall effect is one of strolling along a seaside path, maybe with a stray dog and a straw hat, in a less-frequented village somewhere far from home, and it's one of Banhart's most satisfying".

"There's a sense of freedom in his voice, hinting at a clean break from the past and a move toward more comfortable, if less inspired, territory. It just goes to show that Banhart might be more in control than we think, even when it seems like he's barely there".
