""Look, when they tell me that in my music, I am mainly concerned with bringing together a little nostalgia and a lot of good humor and optimism, well, I think that's exactly how I'd like to be remembered: with a bit of nostalgia, lots of optimism, and good humor" - If we listened to enough of his music (and not just the film music), Nino Rota's wish might well come true, not least when listening to the third of his ten operas, the snappy Florentine Straw Hat (Il cappello di paglia di Firenze). This is his most popular stage work, which Rota wrote in Bari following the end of World War II and orchestrated a decade later for its premiere in Palermo".

"Opera choice: Though the plot is featherlight, Rota's score, influenced by Poulenc and (much further back) Rossini, is delightful, a box of clever musical ideas ... Light tenor Piotr Buszewski leads as the half-crazed Fadinard, with conductor Daniele Squeo drawing an excellent performance from a large cast and his local forces".

"This appears to be the first digital recording of Nino Rota's 1955 comedy ... Rota's music is a blend of verismo, Schicchi-like buffa and operetta, but lacks the latter's consistent sparkle and verve, perhaps as the story is clunkily told ... The big number is Fadinard's 'Io voglio quel cappello' ... delivered here with no lack of seductive Italianate legato - and a ringing top note - by Piotr Buszewski. The equivalent moment for Fadinard's fiancée Elena is 'Papà, gli voglio bene', sung with impressive control by Tetiana Miyus, whose soprano is lined with a steely strength. You can imagine both those moments heightening the atmosphere inside a theatre".
