"Der Stimme von Gilchrist eignet ein stärkeres Emotionspotential als der von Pears, dessen Gesang mitunter etwas anämisch wirkt ... Dennoch - oder auch gerade deswegen - ist seine Art, zu singen, ideal für Brittens Musik ... Gilchrist gestaltet vorbildlich linear, phrasiert sensibel bis in extreme Höhenlagen hinein".

"Gilchrist is as agile as his pianist and evidently attuned to the importance of her role ... The mystic union of ground-bass piano with confident vocal line in the concluding 'Death, be not proud' set this interpretation of The Holy Sonnets on a footing with that of tenor Peter Pears and Britten ... It's in the most introspective moments elsewhere - the simple-seeming 'Nocturne' in On This Island, for instance ... that Gilchrist's unique artistry is heard to best advantage".

"Gilchrist, well matched by by Anna Tilbrook's clean-cut playing, offers gentle sensitivity and words that are crystal clear ... Well recorded, with a duo that is perfectly matched, this recital has its virtues. Even so, my preference is for a singer with richer vocal resources".

"Gilchrist is particularly forceful in the first stanza, then employs a beautiful, silky legato for the second. Evident too, from the outset, is the extreme virtuosity and musical sensitivity of Anna Tilbrook's piano playing [On this island] ... I know of no more satisfying performance of the canticle than this one, but there is a certain hectoring quality in parts of the rest of the programme ... The singing is, however, highly intelligent and thoughtful throughout".
