Recommended: In any recorded recital, three qualities are surely essential - interesting repertoire, thoughtful programming and outstanding execution. All three criteria are met here, and abundantly so. Johan Dalene, from Sweden, and the Norwegian Christian Ihle Hadland, despite their youth, have already developed distinguished careers ... It is difficult to imagine more satisfactory performances than those here. This is a splendid release, aided by first-rate SACD recording. I look forward to hearing much more from these admirable performers. I hope BIS will oblige!".

"Nordic Rhapsody, a recital disc from Johan Dalene, the young winner of the 2019 Nielsen prize, and pianist Christian Ihle Hadland. Their energised, eloquent performance of Grieg's Sonata No 1 is preceded by a vibrant selection of lesser-known short pieces by Sibelius, Nielsen, Sinding, Stenhammar and Rautavaara that together showcase Dalene's fiery-sounding brilliance".

"Chamber choice: Youthful passion occasionally pushes him [Johan Dalene] to stylistic excess ... but for most of the time he's beauty incarnate and in perfect step with his composers' various voices. He's also blessed with a superbly understanding piano partner, Christian Ihle Hadland, who proves especially magical in the Grieg Sonata, poetically tapering phrases and effortlessly navigating changing dynamics".

"Editor's choice: Artistry of a high order from this gifted young Swedish virtuoso, and further proof that his dazzling debut album pairing the Barber and Tchaikovsky Concertos was no flash in the pan. Indeed, Johan Dalene's playing possesses such palpable maturity, intelligence and composure that even a (dare I say it) hoary staple of the violin repertoire such as Sinding's Suite in A minor sounds positively newly minted ... A release to relish".
