"Tilson Thomas is completely at home in Mahler's oeuvre, so there really is no discernable difference in the way he handles the orchestra in the songs or the symphonies, and admirers of his work will be impressed with his control and clarity. Graham and Hampson are among the most accomplished singers going, and their warmth and melodic smoothness are wholly appropriate to the gentleness and longing of Mahler's songs".

"Admirers of Gerhaher's lieder singing won't need any encouragement to listen to this disc. They'll marvel once again at the astonishing range of colour and inflection he applies to every phrase ... Nagano provides perfectly manicured accompaniments, too".

"Thomas Quasthoff may sing them differently today but even at this early stage in his career he had so much insight and his voice had the scope to express what he wanted with the utmost accuracy. Old favourites are still valid but I have definitely added this new favourite to my Mahler collection. I have only two grumbles: there are no texts and translations, which should be a must for such penetrating songs, and I wonder if it wouldn't have been wiser to present the music in a different orde".

"Gerhaher has a light, faintly nasal baritone typical of more recent German vocal tradition; he enunciates words carefully but there is almost no variety of tone or attempt to colour the sound; the effect for me is soporific rather than mesmeric ... Nagano's accompaniment is sensitive and supportive".
