"This release constitutes the fourth volume in Chandos's series of Gustav Holst's orchestral music ... This latest issue is distinguished throughout with fine playing and internal balance; the technical quality of the recording is in the superlative class. Much of the music here comes from Holst's earliest years ... The mature Invocation (A Song of the Evening) is a gem of a masterpiece ... The performance here by Guy Johnston is quite superb; he creates and encapsulates the nature of this remarkable music (1911) admirably and the technical quality of his playing is immaculate ... We look forward to the next volume with eager anticipation".

"It's been a while since Volume 3 appeared in 2013 ... I can't claim that either of these most recent Chandos collections is essential listening, though Indra and Invocation come close to being among my favourite Holst pieces ... The early Winter Idyll is an attractive work ... The Cotswold Symphony marks an advance in style, though not especially towards the Holst to come, and it receives a convincing performance ... The programme concludes with a colourful performance of the Scherzo ... Not essential Holst, then ... but an attractive addition to the ongoing Chandos series".

"After the first disc in this series which was conducted by the late Richard Hickox (Vol. 1), Sir Andrew Davis took on Holst for Chandos (Vol. 2; Vol. 3). Davis has stuck with the project since then and the present CD is the latest salvo. Now the team begin to move down the composer's list of works to the more unusual items ... Davis is in truly excellent form for this collection while the orchestra and Chandos team most assuredly conspire in this".

"Vurdering: Ugens cd" - "'Planeterne' blev hans forbandelse ... Hvordan Gustav Holsts musik ellers lyder kan du høre i denne uge ... På Ugens Cd er både en symfoni, en ouverture og andre flotte værker ... Hans musik viser på flotteste måde, hvad menneskets fantasi kan drømme sig til".

"Orchestral choice: This latest instalment of Chandos's survey of Holst's orchestral works is far more than a predictable beachcomber's delight. The quality of the performances is a feast in itself, the BBC Philharmonic playing with world-class precision that exactly matches the ceaseless quest for clarity in Holst's idiom. The recorded sound, too, conveys needlepoint detail within a natural-sounding, non-clinical ambience".

"This is its third recording, though Adrian Boult's highly atmospheric account with the LSO remain top choice with its thrilling "Dance of the Wolves" finale".

"Das irrische Ulster Orchestra unter der Dirigentin JoAnn Falletta beweist ein vorbildliches Einfühlungsvermögen in die durchweg sympatische Musik".

"Beautifully performed by the BBC Philharmonic, Holst's brilliant orchestral technique and imagination are expertly finessed by Davis who has, beyond any shadow of doubt, stepped into the shoes of Boult, Barbirolli, Handley, Braithwaite, Thomson and Hickox as a true champion of British music of the late 19th and 20th centuries".
