"We can hear - in splendid sonics for the period as restored by Pristine - the Boston audience's trying to absorb and appreciate the chaos and controlled fury Charles Munch and the BSO has laid before them, and they do respond with nervous thanks".

"This Mahler Seventh - and indeed the Nielsen Fifth, too - is a great achievement by Barbirolli. This exemplifies his zeal for Mahler and for making music with ambition in Manchester. It would be a notable Mahler document under most circumstances but when you factor in the pioneering aspect then his achievement - and the achievement of his players - is all the greater. This is a performance that merits the attention of all Mahler enthusiasts and of all Barbirolli admirers. This is not sleek, virtuoso Mahler; it's Mahler from the heart".

"The tapes were in generally excellent condition and sound quality throughout is fine, with just the occasional hint of overload." Andrew Rose's XR remastering and Ambient Stereo breathes new life into the recordings. Admirers of Charles Munch will be delighted to have the chance to hear him in this repertoire. The disc is a very interesting addition to the Munch discography".

"The First and Fourth symphonies of Jean Sibelius, in previously unpublished live recordings from the early 1960s, are major additions to the recorded legacy of Thomas Jensen. As a young cellist, Jensen had known and played under both Nielsen and Sibelius, and his interpretations of their symphonies are stamped with authority: respectful of the score while seeing deep inside its mysteries".

"New York-filharmonikerne spiller vidunderligt ...

Symfoni ... Her kommer Nielsens allerede enkle motiver til at virke overbanale".

"Gilbert leads his New York players in a faithful, virtuosic rendering of all Nielsen's volatile swings between dead-pan facetious and deadly serious".

"Vurdering: Editor's choice" - "Barbirolli gives us a Seventh that isn't afraid to flex its muscles while keeping its heart to the fore ... But that isn't the biggest surprise that this invaluable release has in store for us. Nielsen's Fifth, a first release, hails from the same mammoth concert ... Very strongly recommended".

"The Fifth Symphony (1922) receives a performance that has its measure without quite disclosing its essence ... Should it be a surprise that the Sixth Symphony (1925) receives what is ostensibly the finest reading of this cycle? ... Gilbert closes on an undoubted high, however, and those so persuaded vill find his cycle growing in conviction as it proceeds".

"In sum, this is a reliable and intermittently distinguished modern set of the Nielsen symphonies, to rank alongside the likes of Schønwandt ... The Vienna Phil are on superb form ... Good sound and minimally audible audience presence. Altogether a wonderful listening experience".
