Bésame mucho

Beskrivelse

Summary: Juan Diego Flórez's passion for Latin American music started at an early age in Peru, with songs from Cuba and Mexico, especially those by José Alfredo Jiménez. Flórez hopes to convey a representative image of the Latin American continent using songs that are all exemplary of the people and their various countries. The musical journey include Venezuelan "Caballo Viejo" as well as music from Columbia and the Argentine protest song "Sólo le pido a Dios." There's also "Aquarela do Brasil" from Brazil and finally classics like "Guantanamera" from Cuba. This album is certainly Floréz's most personal one so far.

"The reduction from large orchestra to chamber format means that there is greater intimacy this time, even though Juan Diego Flórez is more prone to hold on to brilliant top notes a bit longer and the tone in general is slightly darker and fuller ... The voice is still a bel canto instrument and he has basically retained the qualities that have served him so well during the career: beauty of tone, ability to nuance, effortless delivery, good taste, elegance, stunning coloratura, a perfect trill and good enunciation. His pianissimo singing is superb and his falsetto is remarkable. Steeped in the rhythms of Latin America from his earliest years he is ideally equipped for the repertoire on the new disc ... Some of the songs are well-known: Bésame mucho of course ... but there are many other songs here worth anyone's attention ... There is such vitality and joy in the music making that it is hard to resist".

"This glorious album illuminates a very different side to the Peruvian tenor, with the singer returning to the music of his childhood in this appealing collection of Latin American songs ... The album ranges freely across South and Central America, with songs from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico and, of course, Flórez native Peru. Flórez responds to this variety with sensitivity, bringing a rich array of vocal styles to the album ... This is an album packed with delights, produced and performed with great care, sensitivity and heart".

"Flórez is very much at home in this repertoire, for the most part, and particularly in the songs from his native Peru ... Most of the programme is enjoyable, and a few songs are absolute knockouts ... His tone may have lost some of its lightness and ease, perhaps, but its radiant tonal sheen remains a joy".
